Mid-Atlantic Conference Preview

The 2007 Mid-Atlantic Conference planning committee headed by Dan Spears of BMI and John Mozes held a planning meeting this week at Caesars in Atlantic City. The conference will be held this year on June 4th and 5th. The conference theme is Localism. Over the air free radio can and does do the best job of localism and that’s the reason listeners listen. The conference will be full of ideas on how to do localism better, to make our audiences more loyal.

Engineering, headed by Tom Ray of Buckley Broadcasting, plans to have a discussion on instant remotes, at low or no cost, using the Internet. Questions such as, “what does a studio need to make it easier to originate local programming” will be addressed. The sessions will also feature engineers who have been there, done that.  Truly a group with hands on experience.

Programming, headed by Eric Johnson of Millennium Radio, will hold a session on local news. What’s needed to have a great local news operation and what kind of innovative programming helps make a station sound local, yet professional? Learn from the people who make it happen, everyday. In addition, there will be a major discussion on the People Meter and what this means to programmers, who will now have a minute by minute knowledge of what their audience thinks.

Government Relations and the FCC Management Sessions will be supervised by Dan Hendrickson of Greater Media. Our attorneys will be on hand to answer any and all broadcast related questions, without the usual bill. In addition, Roy Stewart, Deputy Chief of the media bureau will share his ideas of localism with us.

Sales, featuring Paul Weyland, will train sellers on getting more local business. Going direct to the client and closing the deal. Paul will be conducting a full day’s sales training session emphasizing selling ideas to advertisers. Attendees will learn how to make more money for themselves and their companies.

The meetings keynote speaker will be the President and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters, Dr. David K. Rehr. David has been spending his first year on the job crisscrossing the country, talking to broadcasters in all size markets, learning what makes this industry tick. He is a quick study and will share his fresh ideas about localism with us.

The conference will kick off Monday night June 4th, on the new spectacular Pier at Caesars and will close with another John Mozes extravaganza, Tuesday, June 5th. Save the dates!

Best of the Best deadline, Thursday, April 5, 2007.
