Vision Statement: NJBA - leader of the New Jersey Broadcasting Industry, is a fiscally sound organization with clear direction, a stable and diverse membership, and the ability to effectively support, represent, and achieve success for its members. NJBA Weekly Newsletter, February 23, 2007 Matejka’s The One Press Communications announced this week that Wes Matejka has joined their company as General Manager of the Breeze, WHTG-FM, WBBO-FM, WKMK-FM, and WHTG-AM. In addition, he will oversee sales as General Sales Manager. Wes was formally in Memphis, TN, working for Entercom. He also held positions in sales in Beaumont, TX and Sarasota, FL. He will be headquarted at Press’ Neptune studios. More News From Press Terri Carr has joined Press as Program Director for the G Rock stations, (WHTG-FM and WBBO-FM). Previously, Carr was the Program Director for WDHA-FM and worked for Sirius Radio in New York City as Rock Format Manager. She’s currently on the air at WAXQ-FM, New York City. Bob Shannon has also joined the Press Staff at the Breeze as on the air talent. He worked for 19 years for WCBS-FM. Bound For Washington A number of NJ Broadcasters will be joining President Phil Roberts on a trip to Washington to attend the State Leadership Conference, presented annually by the NAB. Broadcasters from all over the country will be attending the conference and then assaulting Capitol Hill to discuss broadcaster issues with our members of Congress. These broadcasters will be spending a better part of a week in the nation’s capitol. FCC To Regulate Violence On TV??? Chairman Martin and Commissioner Copps are pushing a report for Congress that would allow the FCC to regulate Violence on TV. Both over the air broadcasts and perhaps cable and satellite TV as well. The FCC is asking Congress for permission to treat violence the same way it treats obscenity. The problem is the first amendment. Secondly, what do you do about sports, documentaries or will it only be in effect for scripted shows? The other major question is News. What happens to “if it bleeds, it leads”...The bottom line is this notion interferes with the rights of broadcasters to broadcast whatever they think is in the public interest and is the first rung of the slippery slope to Government -- Censorship of Broadcasters. Sirius and XM Agree To Agree Both satellite companies have agreed to go before the government and request permission to merge. Neither company has ever earned a dime in profit nor had they been able to deliver on their promises to their stockholders. In requesting the merger, they are expected to point out all of the competition for listeners that exists in today’s marketplace. The NAB has already announced that their opposed to the merger and will fight it both in court and Congress. The goal of the satellite companies is to cut costs and end competition for listeners.
