Re-Up Your NJBA Membership Now

Now is the time to renew your membership in the NJBA. The industry has a laundry list of problems both in Congress and at the FCC. In addition, we could see ourselves fighting a sales tax on an advertising initiative on the state level as well as see new employee paid leave mandates.

To help fight the good fight for free over the air broadcasting, we need your help. Please rejoin for 2008 today. It’s real simple. Just go the NJBA website; www.njbroadcasters.org and click on the join now button. Download and print the form, fill it out and send it along with your check for membership dues, which goes directly to lobbying to NJBA today. Thanks!

Political Broadcast Advisory Manual Available Now

Although the 2008 Presidential Election is almost a year away, the Iowa caucus is less than 30 days from today. The Election season is almost upon us. NASBA lawyers Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman has once again published their very excellent manual for political advertising for both TV and Radio. Such questions as: Who is a legally qualified candidate? What is reasonable access? What constitutes a “Use”, etc. is all covered. For your free copy, go to www.pillsburylaw.com/bv/bvisapi.dll/portal/ep/paPubDetail.do/pub/20071251722360/channelld/-8595/tabld/5/pageTypeld/9208 and download and print this 29 page manual. Every station needs to have a copy and yours is free.

Movers & Shakers

WOR Radio, New York has announced a number of promotions. In the wake of the retirement of long-time General Manager Bob Bruno on December 31, the station has appointed Jerry Crowley as new General Manager and Vice-President of the Buckley owned heritage station. In addition, Jennifer Buckley has been promoted to Director of Sales and Greg Bilotta has been promoted to Local Sales Manager. Both Buckley and Bilotta have been Sales Account Executives with the station for several years.

NJBA Chairman’s Father Dies

Andrew J. Santoro, Sr., father of Andy Santoro, Regional VP and General Manager of NJ 101.5, passed away. The wake and funeral were held in Fords, NJ and internment was at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, NJ.  Andy thanks everyone for their thoughts and prayers.

WWOR-TV Has Rocky License Renewal Hearing

The public had a chance to tell the FCC whether it thinks Channel 9 should have its license renewed. The hearing held in Newark was at the instigation of Senator Frank Lautenberg, who has had many constituents complain to him that the station does not do a good job of catering to the New Jersey audience and would rather be a New York City station instead. A number of community groups filed petitions with the FCC requesting denial of the license to the Murdock owned station. Murdock also owns Channel 5 and Fox. Renewal is expected.
